Introduced in 1954, the Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint two-door coupe was soon joined by a family of Giulietta variants including a convertible ’Spider’ and four-door saloon ‘Berlina’. The new car was styled by Franco Scaglione at Bertone and powered by a 1,290cc, all-alloy, twin-cam, four-cylinder engine designed by Orazio Satta Puliga. The Giulietta range was very successful for Alfa Romeo and were the company’s first volume-produced cars.

Chassis AR 158831 is a late production Type 101 example built before the Giulietta was replaced by the Giulia in 1962. The accompanying history file begins in 1987 when then-owner James Wojcik, of New York commissioned a full body, mechanical and electrical restoration by ‘4 In-Tune Works’ of Stoneridge, New York between 1987 and 1989.

Photographs and invoices on file detail the depth of the restoration and confirm the body was fully stripped back to bare metal and repainted in classic Italian red. The engine received a full rebuild and a new electrical harness was installed along with a newly retrimmed interior in black vinyl with grey cloth by Fallsview of New York.

Subsequently the Alfa was acquired by Daniel Schnitta, founder and owner of GingerMan Raceway, South Haven, Michigan. He later sold the car to Marty Boysen of Allan Christian Motor Cars of Holland, Michigan before being purchased by Frank Nezrick of St. Charles Illinois in 1999. In 2011 the Sprint was acquired by George Bowers also of Illinois, who improved the car further with the installation of new front and rear screen rubbers, door seals, door glass felt, headlining and boot floor covering.
The Giulietta Sprint later formed part of the Elkhart Collection which was auctioned by RM Sothebys in October 2020 where it was acquired by the current owner who imported and registered it in the UK.

The new owner commissioned Alfa Romeo specialists DTR Sportscars to carry out further improvements in 2021, which included stripping and rebuilding the rear brakes with new pipes, fluid and handbrake cable. The fuel hoses were replaced, and a new exhaust system fitted along with new prop-shaft doughnut, windscreen washer pump, wiper blades, fuel pump and battery.

Sensible upgrades include desirable five-speed gearbox and modern lap-belts. An older restoration, the car still presents very well today with only a couple of paint chips marring an otherwise excellent exterior. The interior has a similarly fresh appearance and remains in very good order.

The car will be sold with a fresh MOT and ready to be enjoyed by its next custodian. The Giulietta Sprint is a desirable classic, highly usable and eligible for many classic events.
