The Porsche Carrera 3.2 replaced the outgoing 911SC in 1984. With an increased capacity of 3.2-litres the revised engine had a Bosch Motronic engine management system and LE-Jetronic fuel injection and produced 215 BHP. In 1987 the old Type 915 transmission was replaced by the much-improved Getrag G50 five-speed gearbox. That same year Porsche displayed a prototype of the new 911 Speedster.

Conceived as a lighter and simpler 911 the new model was clearly inspired by the iconic 356 Speedster of the 1950s. However, production didn’t commence until January 1989, the final year of the Carrera 3.2. The new Speedster had an aluminium windscreen frame that was cut down and more steeply inclined (by 5 degrees) than the Cabriolet. The convertible top was lighter, manually operated and folded under a rigid body-coloured cover which hinged at its forward end for access and remained in place when the top was up. When the roof was down the higher tail design reduced drag and turbulence inside the car. In addition, the door windows were frameless, manually operated and had no quarterlights. Inside, the rear seats were deleted with the area instead covered in Club Sport-style carpeting.

The Speedster was available in wide-bodied ‘Turbo-look’ form with flared front and rear wings or with a narrow-body which was fifty kilograms lighter than the wide-body option. Only Turbo-look cars were sold in Germany and the US so consequently the narrow-bodied variant is much rarer. According to sources, a total of 2,065 Carrera 3.2 Speedsters were built of which 1,894 were Turbo-look. The remaining 171 Speedsters being of narrow-body design. It is believed approximately 10 narrow-body Speedsters were produced in RHD form.

Chassis WP0ZZZ91ZKS152451 is one of these RHD narrow bodied Speedsters. Delivered new to Australia on the 27th October 1989 via John Newell Porsche Centre of Sydney, the new car was specified in the classic 911 colour combination of Guards red with black leather interior and black convertible top. Options included a velour luggage compartment lining and anti-theft device.

Our Speedster was registered in February 1991 to Porsche factory racing driver and 1983 Le Mans winner Vern Schuppan who soon imported it into the UK. Maintained from new by official Porsche Centres and notable Porsche specialists this rare and collectible Speedster remains in excellent order. A new clutch was fitted by Porsche Centre Byfleet at 50,862 kms (May 2009) and in July 2012 the engine received a full top-end overhaul by renowned UK Porsche specialists Autofarm at 53,032 kms. The rebuild included refacing the heads, new valves, new valve guides and new cam and rocker shafts with the final invoice totalling £7,542.95. In November 2020 Parr Porsche Specialists fitted new tyres and rebuilt the front brakes with new discs, pads and calipers and renewed the flexi hoses and metal brake lines.

The car has been driven sparingly over the years by a handful of collectors and enthusiasts and today the odometer shows just over 58,000 kilometres, only 36,000 miles.

An extensive history file accompanies the car which contains multiple invoices and MOT certificates that document the mileage covered to date. Also present are stamped service book, 3.2 owner’s manual and Speedster supplement manual, spare keys and toolkit.

In summary, a very rare opportunity to purchase a RHD narrow-bodied 911 Speedster, surely one of the most coveted of Porsches.
