Along with the Ferrari Testarossa and Lamborghini Countach, the Porsche 930 is one of the key poster cars of the eighties. But, unlike the Ferrari and Lamborghini, the 930 was a genuine homologation model which allowed Porsche to race the 934 and 935.
The signature ‘whale-tail’ of the Turbo increased airflow to the engine and increased downforce. Wider rear wheels and arches completed the now iconic look. In 1978 Porsche increased engine capacity from 3 litres to 3.3 which, along with an intercooler, increased power significantly from 256 to 296hp. Suspension and brakes were upgraded accordingly to cope with the significant increase in power.
Our 1985 example is finished in Iris blue with black leather interior and was delivered new to legendary British rally driver Roger Clark’s dealership in Narborough, Leicestershire. Unfortunately, we don’t know whether it was Rogers’s personal car.
By 1999 the Turbo was in the ownership of Viscountess Cranley of Oadby and was maintained by Nottingham and Guildford Porsche Centres who in 2002 fitted new oil pipes, oil coolers, heat exchanger, exhaust system and clutch totalling some £6,697.00.
In July 2003 the car was purchased by a Mr. Hamilton of Selby, Yorkshire who ordered a full engine rebuild at 62,298 miles at a cost of over £7,000 and has completed fewer than six thousand miles since.
A Mr. Lewthwaite of Chester Le Street acquired the car in July 2011 and carried out further improvements including replacement of rear wheel bearings at 63,356 miles.
In 2015 the car joined the collection of the current owner who enhanced the car further. The engine was removed for a new clutch in 2018 and re-installed by Porsche Centre Glasgow at a cost of £2,688. The car was added to the Porsche Classic Register at this time. A new Classic Retrofit programmable CDI unit was also installed (in an original Bosch box) which offers a significant improvement over the standard Porsche item, producing a more even spark across the rev range and a smoother idle.
The body was then restored in July 2019 (at a cost of just under £9,000) by Scottish Porsche specialists Border Reivers. During the restoration corrosion was discovered in both B-pillars and kidney bowls which were replaced with new items. The car then received a full repaint in Iris blue. Finally, a ceramic protection was applied to the body, trim and wheels. Reassuringly, the restoration is documented in a series of detailed photographs which show the high quality of the work carried out.
The car was recently serviced in April 2022 at 67,307 miles and four new Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tyres were also fitted along with a fresh MOT.
Today, the car comes complete with spare key and original manuals pouch containing Porsche service agent book, Porsche 911 Turbo Driver’s manual and a Pocket Guide to Porsche Ownership.
Having covered just over 68,000 documented miles from new, a full engine rebuild fewer than 6,000 miles ago, and a recent body restoration this 930 Turbo remains in stunning condition. That, coupled with a comprehensive history file of invoices and MOT certificates and a finish in the best colour combination make this 930 is a very exciting proposition indeed.
