In the 1920s Lagonda introduced the 14/60 with its twin-cam, 1954cc, 4-cylinder engine with hemispherical combustion chambers. In 1927 power was increased with the introduction of the 2-litre ‘Low-chassis’ Speed Model which from 1930 included a supercharger to address the breathing issues of the standard engine.
To handle this significant increase in power Lagonda fitted a stronger crankshaft and a 3-litre rear axle. A Powerplus supercharger was utilised for the first few cars, but subsequently most 'blown' 2-litres came with a Cozette supercharger.
This 2-litre Low chassis Supercharged has a Powerplus ‘blower’ and was first registered on 1st October 1930 to Mr. Dewhurst of Stockport, Lancashire. Ownership passed to a Mr. Joseph Spurr of Dewsbury, Yorkshire before being purchased in 1946 by Maurice Leo, the main Lagonda repairer in Britain in the 1950 and 1960s and a founding member of the Lagonda Club.
After an extensive rebuild in 1947 Maurice took the Lagonda on a 2,000-mile tour to Milan including a pause to spectate at the Swiss Grand Prix of that year (we have some fascinating photographs of this 1947 trip). The rebuilt car went on to compete in races at Silverstone and Goodwood and for many years held the fastest time for a Lagonda at Prescott and Firle Hillclimbs. GK3255 also won the Lagonda Club Densham Trophy in 1962 & 1964.
In October 2000 the body was removed from the chassis to be recovered in black Everflex by Gary H. Wright Coach Trimming. At the same time Wright’s also retrimmed the seats and door cards in green Bridge of Weir hide, fitted new green Wilton carpets with green leather binding and fabricated a new hood, side-screens, hood bag and tonneau cover in black Duck. The dashboard was also re-polished.
GK3255 was last driven by my Maurice Leo in 2009 at the Kop Hillclimb and on his death passed to his son. A remarkable single-family ownership of over 76 years.
Today the Lagonda remains in excellent order and is running well after recent recommissioning work and comes with an incredible history file that illustrates its continuous history with many invoices, receipts and letters dating back to 1946, including correspondence from the Lagonda Company.
Scans of period photographs also show the amazing life this car has led with pictures of it racing in the 1940’s, 50s and 60’s at many of the country’s leading motorsport venues.
Also included in the sale are two boxes of spare parts, a list of events and competitions entered from 1946, two original Lagonda 2-litre factory instruction books and a rare period 2-litre “Care & maintenance” manual by Davies Motors along with other technical publications.
